Define construction before comparing prices

  • Fibre composition: state the required percentages and request confirmation for the quoted construction.
  • Weight: give finished GSM, dimensions and acceptable tolerances. Compare weight per piece as well as GSM.
  • Yarn and pile: specify pile yarn, ground construction and the reference quality where available.
  • Edges and borders: describe hem construction, cam or dobby border and any identification marks.
  • Colour: identify white or dyed goods and the shade reference.

Calculate approximate towel weight

For a rectangular towel, approximate fabric weight in grams = length in metres × width in metres × GSM. A 70 × 140 cm towel at 450 GSM gives 0.70 × 1.40 × 450 = 441 grams before allowing for construction and finishing differences. Agree the actual finished weight and tolerance with the supplier.

Agree wash trials with your laundry

Share wash temperature, chemicals, drying equipment and finishing process. Test a sample in the intended process and agree the number of trial cycles, measurement method and acceptable changes.

  • Measure dimensions before and after washing to assess shrinkage.
  • Review seam integrity, border distortion, lint and surface appearance.
  • Check absorbency using an agreed method.
  • For dyed goods, review shade change and transfer; for white goods, assess appearance after your normal wash process.
