A hotel towel collection has to work in the guest bathroom, the laundry and the purchasing budget. Jacquard and dobby describe aspects of woven design; neither term, on its own, proves absorbency, softness or service life. Start with the required appearance, then compare actual samples under the same laundering conditions.
What changes between the two constructions?
Jacquard weaving allows detailed patterns to be formed in the fabric. Dobby constructions are often used for smaller geometric effects and defined borders. A towel may combine a terry body with a woven border, so ask where the design is formed and how it appears on both sides. A photograph rarely reveals the ground construction, pile coverage or reverse surface.
For an understated white hotel collection, a simple border may be enough. For a distinctive spa or retail range, a more elaborate woven pattern may support the design brief. The correct choice depends on your specification and approved sample rather than the name of the weaving method.
Compare equal specifications
- Use the same finished dimensions and comparable GSM.
- Identify fibre percentages and the pile and ground yarn separately.
- Record border width, design repeat and distance from each hem.
- Inspect reverse appearance, edge stitching and folded presentation.
- Agree dimensional and weight tolerances before ordering.
A 70 × 140 cm jacquard sample and a smaller dobby sample cannot be compared fairly by price per piece. Weigh both, measure them and record the quoted packing unit. Confirm whether the quoted design is standard or requires development.
Run a useful laundry trial
Keep an unwashed control and record the dimensions of the trial pieces. Wash and dry both constructions using the intended hotel or contracted laundry process. Compare handle, border distortion, shade, lint, hems and pile appearance at agreed checkpoints. A visually attractive showroom sample may behave differently after laundering.
Use the same trial conditions for both suppliers. If one sample is washed gently at home and another enters a commercial process, the comparison tells you little about the proposed order.
Plan replacement stock
Complex patterns may require different development or reorder arrangements. Ask about repeat availability, colour references and minimum quantities for each size. Keep a signed reference sample and approved artwork so future orders can be assessed against the same standard.

Is jacquard always the premium option?
No. Material, construction, finishing and the approved performance matter together. Choose the towel that fits your service brief, not simply the more elaborate design.
