A cotton composition label does not answer every question behind a vegan product claim. A buyer considering that wording should define the claim, review the complete product and ask what evidence supports it. Avoid using an undefined phrase such as vegan-free: it can communicate the opposite of the intended message.
Define the claim before developing packaging
Write down the standard or verification scheme the product must meet, if one is required. Identify who will review the evidence and approve the final wording for the intended market. Different schemes may request different information, so do not assume one supplier statement covers every programme.
Keep fibre composition separate from vegan status. Organic content, recycled content and chemical testing labels address different questions; none should be presented as automatic proof of a vegan claim.
Review the full bill of materials
Ask for information covering the towel fabric, sewing thread, labels, decoration, finishes and any components included in the retail presentation. Where the selected scheme requires process information, agree how that information will be obtained and reviewed.
- Define the exact proposed claim.
- Identify every relevant material and component.
- Request supplier declarations and supporting evidence.
- Review any certification against its actual scope.
- Approve wording and logos before packaging is printed.
Keep evidence specific to the product
A general statement about a company’s values is not a product approval record. Ask which item, construction, finishing route and production period the documents cover. If a logo is required, confirm the applicable permission and verification process rather than reproducing a mark from a website.
For orders with a vegan claim requirement, confirm the applicable materials, verification route and development feasibility during quotation.
Manage changes and reorders
Include the agreed claim requirements in the specification. Request notification when a relevant material, finish or component changes, and decide whether the change requires another review. Retain the approved artwork version alongside the evidence used to approve it.
For broader checks, read our organic versus conventional cotton guide and supplier comparison checklist. A documented, clearly worded requirement gives the supplier a better brief than an unsupported marketing label.
