Ring-spun and open-end describe yarn manufacturing routes. They are useful purchasing details, but they do not identify every feature of a finished towel. Buyers need the yarn information together with fibre composition, construction, weight and the approved wash results.
Identify where the yarn is used
A terry towel has pile yarn and a supporting ground structure. Ask which yarn system is used in each relevant part. A quotation that simply says ring-spun towel can leave the ground yarn, pile specification and blend unclear.
Record the yarn description in the specification rather than treating a marketing label as the complete technical answer. Also distinguish spinning method from carding or combing: these are different stages and should not be used interchangeably.
Compare equivalent samples
Start with the same finished size, target GSM, composition and intended use. Assess handle, absorbency using an agreed method, lint, dimensional change, surface appearance and hem condition. If the samples differ in several variables, a preference cannot reliably be attributed to spinning method alone.
- Identify pile and ground yarn specifications.
- Confirm fibre composition and any blend.
- Record dimensions, GSM and piece weight.
- Use the intended laundry process for comparison.
- Agree acceptance criteria before ordering.
Make the wash trial part of approval
Keep labelled samples and record the wash cycles, detergent, extraction and drying conditions used. Compare them against an unwashed reference. Ask how the proposed bulk production will be checked against the approved sample.
For a hotel programme, invite the laundry and housekeeping teams to assess handling and appearance. For retail, also check the packaging presentation and the accuracy of fibre and care information. A softer initial handle is only one part of the assessment.
Request prices against the same brief
Ask the supplier to explain proposed options and any effect on development terms, quantities or production timing. Do not assume that one spinning label guarantees a particular service life or makes every towel appropriate for the same use.
For background on the processes, see CottonWorks’ yarn spinning resource. Explore our carded towel guide only where its specification is relevant, and use the commercial laundry guide to structure testing.
