Towel GSM is the fabric’s mass in grams per square metre. It helps buyers compare weight, but it cannot independently predict softness, durability, drying time or laundry cost. A useful quotation and operating worksheet starts with dimensions and continues with a measured sample trial.
Calculate an area-based piece weight
Multiply length in metres by width in metres and then by GSM. For an illustrative 70 × 140 cm towel, the area is 0.98 m². At 450 GSM the calculated weight is 441 g; at 500 GSM it is 490 g; at 600 GSM it is 588 g.
These figures are planning estimates rather than production acceptance results. Borders, hems, finishing and measurement conditions must be covered in the agreed specification. Weigh representative finished samples and record the agreed tolerance.
Compare like with like
A small heavy towel and a large lighter towel can have similar piece weights. Put finished size, GSM, composition, construction and actual piece weight on the same comparison sheet. Include washed dimensions and visual condition.
- Record the product code and sample date.
- Measure finished length and width.
- Confirm GSM and sample piece weight.
- Describe pile, border and hem construction.
- Record the wash process and observed results.
Measure the operating cost
Drying performance depends on more than weight: fabric structure, extraction, load size, dryer conditions and the laundry process all matter. Ask the laundry to trial equivalent loads and record wash time, drying time, resource use and acceptable finished condition.
If measured processing cost is available, compare it per usable piece or per agreed load. Add purchase cost, replacement experience and rejected pieces using your own operating records. Do not present an assumed saving percentage as a result of changing GSM.
Choose a specification for the service
A hotel may prioritise repeatable laundering and stock handling, while a retail collection may prioritise the customer’s preferred feel and presentation. Describe those priorities to the supplier and compare approved samples. There is no universal luxury GSM that settles all buying decisions.
