Bath sheets are generally offered as a larger bathing towel, but the names are not a complete specification. A hotel or retail buyer should compare the actual dimensions, weight and construction of both items before deciding which belongs in the range.
Compare area before comparing GSM
GSM describes fabric mass per square metre. It does not describe the weight of a whole towel unless its area is also known. Two towels with the same GSM can therefore have different piece weights.
Consider an illustrative 70 × 140 cm bath towel and 90 × 160 cm bath sheet, both specified at 500 GSM. The area-based weights are about 490 g and 720 g. That calculation is a planning estimate; the finished sample weight remains the purchasing reference. It shows why size affects stock handling even when the GSM is unchanged.
Check the guest and customer experience
Open the sample, wrap it and check its dimensions after the agreed washing process. A larger item may suit a premium room or a retail collection focused on generous coverage. A smaller item may fit the existing bathroom presentation or customer brief more closely. These are purchasing choices, not fixed quality categories.
For hotels, test the sample with towel rails, shelving and the housekeeping fold. Record whether the chosen size remains practical once washed. Include the laundry team in the decision rather than approving the towel from an unwashed showroom sample.
Account for stock and laundering
Measure folded volume and compare actual wash and drying trials. Greater fabric mass changes the load being handled, but drying time also depends on construction, extraction, equipment and operating settings. Do not use GSM alone to predict a universal laundry cost.
- Specify finished length and width.
- Record composition, GSM and piece-weight tolerances.
- Approve borders, hems and logo placement.
- Test dimensions and appearance after washing.
- Calculate quantities separately for each room category.
Keep the assortment easy to replenish
If both sizes are used, give each its own stock code and carton marking. Confirm quantities by size and shade, and retain approved samples for repeat orders. A retail buyer should show measurements on packaging so customers can compare products without relying on the name alone.
